I had the privilege to know Alastair Graham as a trade union activist, grassroots campaigner, and editor of the Clarion, when we both lived in Halifax, West Yorkshire. In the 1980s, we were both members of the Halifax Trades Council. Alastair did the mundane task most delegates avoided: writing the minutes. We shared experiences of demonstrations against Tory cuts, marches opposing wars and racism, support for the miners during the 1984-85 strike, and celebratory May Day events. His politics combined traditional values of ‘Old Labour’ – equality, better public service for all, trade union rights, and collectivism. After I emigrated with my family to Canada, we kept in touch through letters, Christmas cards, and the Clarion. I particularly remember his beautiful cursive handwritten letters and handcrafted Christmas cards. I last saw him when he and Ruth visited us in Calgary in 1999. Alastair represented the very best of our generation of grassroots political activists.
